2012 TFA Reunion

Sugar Land Texas Invites Thayers & Friends to Lone Star’s Sweet Spot

Join Us
2012 Reunion Dates May 31 - June 2

(Kate Welton Kuzmich – 2012 Reunion Chair)

Sugar Land, Texas invites the members and friends of Thayer Families Association to the 2012 Reunion. Sugar Land is about 20 miles southwest of Houston and is named for its longstanding involvement with the sugar industry.

Sugar Land is a bustling area where a 15 minute drive in opposite directions finds you in the heart of Houston or in a working ranch. We have planned TFA activities beginning on May 31st continuing through dinner on June 2nd.

Come a few days early or stay for a while after the reunion and explore Galveston, the Houston Museum District, or enjoy the extensive genealogy collection at Clayton Library Center for Genealogical Research.

The weather is still mild, usually. Expect daytime highs to be in the high seventies, possibly the low eighties. It is humid, for the most part. We’ll be exploring Texas history and other fun and interesting activities.

We’ll also have the 2012 Membership meeting for TFA where all members come together to voice their opinions and hear the proposals from the TFA Board. The Membership meeting isn’t long, but it is very important, as it is the vehicle TFA uses to keep the organization viable and moving forward to complete the goals set forth in the by-laws.

Complete information, itinerary, and reservation forms are included in the following pages.

Mark your calendars, make your travel plans. We’ll see you in Texas in May! Reservation deadline:May 16, 2012 Deadline

Schedule of Events

Thursday, May 31st, 6:00 to 8:00 pm, Missouri City, Texas

Dutch treat dinner at:

Spring Creek Barbeque

4895 State Highway 6

Missouri City, TX

Spring Creek Barbeque is located 4.4 miles south of our motel, Hilton Garden Inn, on Texas State Highway 6. TFA will have exclusive use of their banquet room for the evening. This venue provides a traditional Texas barbeque line-up. A particular local favorite is the Biggio Special, named for future hall-of-fame baseball player Craig Biggio of the Houston Astros. It consists of two meats, brisket and sausage. If you like a little spice, be sure to try the black pepper sausage. A full menu is available at:

http://www.springcreekbarbeque.com/

The area containing Sugar Land is often referred to as the “Tri-Cities” by long-time residents. Until the 1990’s when Sugar Land grew very quickly, a triangle was formed by the cities of Sugar Land, Stafford, and Missouri City. Today, other than street signs having different colors, or a designation on signs indicating a boundary, you won’t realize you are moving between the three cities at all.

This venue/meal will constitute our “meet and greet” for the reunion weekend. Bring a story or a memento from your Thayer family. Be ready to make new friends and enjoy good food.

Friday, June 1st

At 8:30am US Coachways will provide a motor coach for up to 49 people to travel to Washington-on-the-Brazos State Park from the motel parking lot. Washington-on-the- Brazos is “the birthplace of Texas” and slightly more than a one-hour drive from the motel. TFA is underwriting the cost of transportation for this event.

We will be touring the three areas within the park: Independence Hall; Star of the Republic Museum; and Barrington Living History Farm. A group tour reservation has been made for this date. Cost: $6.00 for Adults. Tip for the guide following the tour is appreciated. RESERVATIONS THROUGH TFA, BY MAILING IN THE ENCLOSED RESERVATION FORM, ARE ABSOLUTELY REQUIRED TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS EVENT.

For more information see: http://www.birthplaceoftexas.com/

Following the tour we will be having lunch at Picnic Pavilion A. There are two menu choices: Chicken salad (specialty) or turkey sandwich, chips, pickle, cookie and drink. The cost per lunch is $8.00.

Please use the ENCLOSED RESERVATION FORM to make your selection. Ya-Ya’s , a small local catering company that comes highly recommended will be providing the meal. If you aren’t sure which sandwich to choose, I’ve been told the chicken salad is their most requested variety.

Be sure to “save some room” because following lunch the bus will take us to one of the most popular destinations in central Texas, the Blue Bell creamery in Brenham, Texas. If you’re in Texas, only Blue Bell ice cream will do.

We will be touring the production facility which takes approximately 45 minutes, after which we’ll eat ice cream in their General Store. General admission: $5.00; seniors (55+) $3.00. This event is somewhat different as we will not ask for payment prior to the Reunion. Our date, June 1st, falls one day outside their group tour reservation limits. Therefore tour tickets must be purchased on May 31st. We will be doing a head- count on May 31st from amongst those going on the bus tour and purchasing the tickets for the group. IT IS POSSIBLE, BUT UNLIKELY, that we will not be able to get tour tickets for the facility due to large crowds, etc. If that occurs we will still enjoy ice cream at the General Store but will have to purchase it individually. For this event we’ll need to “go with the flow”.

To find more information go to: http://www.bluebell.com/
We will return by bus to the motel, expected arrival before 5:00pm.

Dinner on Friday is not planned by TFA. There are many, many restaurants close to the motel.

Obituaries

Buryl Stewart THAYER

Buryl Stewart Thayer, who lived in Seattle the past fifteen years and in Spokane for forty years, passed away April 7, 2012. Constance Buryl Lavinia Stewart was born in 1922 in Nanaimo, British Columbia, and moved to Everett, Washington with her parents when she was three years old. She graduated from Everett High School, and then from Washington State University in 1945, where she was a member of Chi Omega sorority. She received a master's degree in fine arts from WSU in 1953. She met J. Lewis Thayer-who had returned to college after service in the Navy during World War II-at Washington State, and they were married in 1948. Over the next nine years they had five children. Early in the marriage, Lewis's employer, Union Oil Company, transferred him (and so his family) from Eugene, Oregon to Wenatchee and then to Ephrata, Washington. The family moved to Spokane in 1957, and Lewis began operating the family wheat farm near Almira, Washington, commuting between Almira and Spokane. Lewis passed away in 1982. Buryl taught interior design at the Spokane Community College extension school for sixteen years, and worked as a freelance interior designer. In 1997 she moved to Seattle to be closer to her children. Buryl is survived by her sons James S. Thayer and his wife Patricia of Seattle, John L. Thayer M.D. and his wife Kathleen of Medina, WA, Joseph T. Thayer of Shoreline, WA, her daughter Constance Jill Thayer of Shoreline, and seven grandchildren. Her fourth son, Jay M. Thayer, died in 2010. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and friend, and will be sorely missed. The family is planning a private memorial gathering.
